GGCMC was a high school singing club called Girl’s Glee Club and Men’s Chorus. We performed several times a year at Cleveland Heights High School where I went to school. Actress Sean Young was a co-member with a big group of us girls. The picture I enclose was of us on-tour in Washington D.C. in the mid-1970s. Man, I’m really dating myself now, aren’t I?
I remember Sean as being very eccentric and very mature beyond her years.
My best friend Carol Gifford (“Giff”) was also in the club and we used to get into all sorts of trouble together.
I was a soprano and Giff was an alto, so we always used to look at each other across the stadium risers when we performed and get each other laughing. And can’t remember where Sean stood or her range.
Sean pretty much kept to herself, but she was good humored.
We traveled on a bus to D.C. and you had to be good humored to travel like that with 100 other high school kids.
Somehow I think Sean always knew she was headed towards greatness. I remember her speaking of pursuing an acting career even way back then. Imagine my surprise when I saw her many years later doing feature films like Dune and Bladerunner as well as the film noir spoof Fatal Instinct.
She would probably remember me as Kathy Phillips, which was my last name before I was adopted by the wonderful man Joe Spira.
As you can tell by the photo, we were just fooling around on our Washington D.C. trip, as high school kids do. None of us had any idea what the future held for us.
I see where she has had two sons since I knew her thirty years ago. I also regularly read People Magazine where she never appears, so I’m guessing she stays out of the celebrity spotlight, unlike my old friend Julia Roberts, who seems to show up regularly.
Well, as the new year starts we remember old memories and friends. Here’s wishing Sean well as well as all of you readers.
