Katherine Heigl stars as Alison Scott, a "Type A" woman who works
behind the scenes at E! Television Network. Although she is on the
career fast track, she lives in the pool house behind her sister
Debbie's home, and helps out with her nieces.
Alison and Ben (Seth Rogen), a 23-year-old slacker who is in the
process of establishing a ridiculous Web site, find themselves at the
same club where she is celebrating her promotion at E! with her
sister. They begin drinking together, and she invites him back to her
pool house. The next morning, they learn that they have very little in
common. Eight weeks later, Alison begins feeling very sick and finds
out that she is pregnant, and she contacts Ben. She tells Ben that she
is pregnant and that she has decided to keep the baby.
Ben and Alison try to make a go of being together for the sake of the
baby, but because they are such polar opposites, conflict arises
early. Ben's initial response of shock and anger mixed with Alison's
frustrations creates tension, resulting in Ben agreeing to take Alison
to the OB/GYN to confirm the pregnancy.
In the meantime, Alison's sister Debbie suspects her husband, played
by Paul Rudd, is having an affair when actually he is sneaking out to
play fantasy football with the guys.
Ben's conflict with Alison and Debbie's anger with her husband, Pete,
form a bond between the men and they take off for a road trip to Las
Vegas. Possibly the funniest scenes in the movie come where Ben and
Pete take magic mushrooms while at Cirque du Soleil. While
hallucinating, they have a revelation that they should be back in Los
Angeles and taking responsibility. Of course, the predictable
reconciliations occur with both couples.
I started watching Katherine Heigl on Grey's anatomy (Thursday's on
ABC) and I was happy to find her in a feature film where I wound up
liking her as much as on the TV series.
If you get the chance, rent this movie. It's probably not appropriate
for kids in that it has a lot of "colorful language" throughout the
picture.
