So Sunday, as you are reading this column in the newspaper, (for those who haven’t already seen it on Facebook), I will be at the Bti picnic with Herman. And within a month, on Columbus Day weekend (Saturday, Oct. 8) we will be hosting a hot dog roast and bonfire on our beach for Herman’s 50th high school reunion. Imagine that! Fifty years!

Since both these activities are outdoors, we’re hoping for good weather.

Bti is the acronym for the Latin name of the New York State Department of Conservation’s approved treatment of waterways to thwart black flies from being such a nuisance. (At least they don’t carry the Zika virus!) We’ll have that picnic for the black fly crew at Caroga Town’s pavilion by the Nick Stoner Golf Course.)

Herman has been working with the black fly program for about ten years and has really enjoyed doing it. As he says “I get paid for hiking around in the woods treating streams for black flies. And according to those people that are bothered most by black flies, treating the streams seems to really help.”

I am not a big picnic person, however I look forward to getting together socially with people always! I can not believe that Herman will be celebrating his fifty year class reunion. I went with him to his 40th class reunion and I must say everyone in the room looked pretty good! I have to tell you though, that to me Herman looked to be the most preserved and youngest! He is very active both mentally and physically. He is also a big reader of books, mysteries in particular he enjoys. I, on the other hand read books that are much more family oriented.

I am very much looking forward to hosting the class reunion picnic here at our beach! I really enjoy having beach bonfires and showing off what I consider to be our little piece of heaven here. If everyone attends the picnic, we will have about fifty people here! And if the weather doesn’t cooperate, we will have to move everything into our home. Herman has made arrangements to borrow our neighbors grill, so we will be able to have them both cooking food for our company.

As we are now in September, my bathing suit days are sadly coming to an end, I will probably be wearing shorts and a tank top to both of those events. And though Herman is back to wearing pants hopefully, he will be able to wear shorts and a t-shirt.

To both these parties it makes sense that seems like the best and most casual thing to wear. I cannot face putting my Levis’s back on yet but I know that day is coming. I include a photo Herman took of me watching a bonfire on our beach last fall.
