    Continuing education continues

So, listen you guys! I am now a college graduate. And I am so proud of this achievement after all these years. Commencement was October 14th in Saratoga Springs; Canfield Casino in Congress Park, to be exact. It certainly has been a long road since I began my studies in 1978 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. I know I’ve told you before that I had left school after my junior year as I had gotten hired for a professional acting troupe.

It was always in the back of my mind to go back and finish, but I became immersed in my quest for fame both in New York City then Los Angeles. Until my MS literally stopped me in my tracks, I hadn’t taken the time to research my educational options. Empire State College has turned out to be a great thing for me as well as for most of the students I met at graduation. It was weird not knowing any of my fellow students until graduation day and it was wonderful finally meeting my advisor and many of the faculty and administration.

We began with a lovely brunch where we first met fellow students and faculty with whom we’d been working over the phone, Internet and mail. After brunch, we all headed down the street to the Canfield Casino where all the students donned our caps and gowns. The college had given each of the female graduates corsages with school colors. I gotta tell you, keeping that cap on was a major undertaking. My mom and one of my sisters came as well as Herman and his cousin and I have to tell you that the ceremony was absolutely magical. I was so proud, and still am, to have been a part of it.

So much so, that after having met the Dean of Graduate Studies, I have decided to go forward and pursue a graduate degree in creative writing after a brief hiatus to gather my thoughts and prepare a focus for my studies. It’ll probably have to be after next summer, because I can’t imagine tearing myself away from the beach and the sun before then.

As to a timetable, I might add that the Dean of Graduate Studies told me to take my time, "Just have it on my desk by Tuesday at 9 A.M." That was Sunday, this is Wednesday. Already I’m behind schedule!
