    It’s "Decksercise" For Me

One of my favorite things to do, as you all know, is to be outside in the sunshine. Around the middle of November, I’m delighted to report that I was sitting outside on my front deck with no coat on as it was bright sunshine. Native Adirondackers will understand how rare that is. As I was sitting in the sunshine, my right foot began to start spasming, no doubt from my MS. My aide, Terry, was inside getting some work done, but periodically checking on me.

It was during one of her visits that she noticed my leg was out of control. What usually calms this down is about an hour on my leg cycle. This machine has a passive mode wherein the machine will move my legs for me. Terry came up with a brilliant idea, because she knew I wouldn’t go inside with the sun shining so brightly.

She simply went in the house and brought my leg machine out to me as it’s on rollers. We found the optimum place so that I could be in the sun while being close to the electrical outlet.

I have to say it was a most wonderful experience. Even made more so by Terry’s proclamation that, "This is now ‘decksercise.’" Imagine me gazing straight up into the sunshine as I’m facing the lake and cycling.

This reminded me of some wonderful experiences I had had when I lived in Southern California. They have these bike paths that are all along the beach. I used to cycle for hours. I also used to run every morning, about seven miles, along the beach, after which I would generally jump in the water. These are the things I miss the most about California.

Especially being able to do this in January. My favorite thing to do used to be to run with my cell phone and just before I would pop into the water, I would call back east just to see what everyone else was doing in January. It was my favorite time to be out there.

Hopefully this winter will wind up being a mild one in the northeast and I’ll be able to sit outside many more days. According to the Farmers Almanac, this is supposed to be a very mild winter. Of course, keeping with my tradition of staying about a month ahead, as I’ve said, I’m writing this in mid-November. By the time you actually read this, the truth will be out! Until that time, I’ll be "decksercizing" on every mild day we have.

I’m finishing this column on December 9th, and woke up to –5F temperature this morning. The temperature combined with the foot of snow we’ve already had makes me think The Farmer’s Almanac might be wrong. It’s supposed to be warmer tomorrow, but I think my days of "decksercizing are over until the spring.
