Academy Awards and My Favorite Picks
you guys happen to see the Academy Awards? It aired on ABC
February 29th. (As Billy Crystal said, “It started
in February and ended in March.”) It was a great show,
and I’m happy to report, except for brief naps during
the beginning, I managed to stay awake for the whole show.
intrigued that Lord of the Rings, which was nominated for
11 Academy Awards, won every single one. As they pointed
out, no movie since Titanic and Ben Hur has won that many
awards. And as Billy Crystal pointed out, it won an award
for each of its endings.
need to know I’m not a big fantasy buff. In fact,
I never saw the movie. And even after it won all those awards,
I’m still not interested in seeing it. I did see Mystic
River, for which Sean Penn won best actor award. And I can’t
say I was all that thrilled with the movie. Herman agrees
with me on that one, though not on the Rings movie.
as I get older I’m more particular and even biased
in what I like. Mystic River was just too dark for my taste.
While The Lord of the Rings is not reality based and has
aspects of action movies, which I also don’t care
to make an announcement off the subject of the Academy Awards.
In eight days I will be turning 44. Did I ever mention to
you guys that Terry, my aide, and I share the same birthday?
Last year we started a tradition of going out to dinner
for our birthdays and we are going to continue it this year
as well. Terry will be 42 this year.
this column is appearing on 4-4-04, I should probably tell
you guys that 4 is my very favorite number, so I don’t
look at 44 as a bad birthday. I’m finding that as
I get older, I am much less inclined to spend time on things
I don’t care for, and that brings us back to the Academy
Awards. I absolutely love award shows; the Academy Awards
being my favorite of all the award shows.
types of movies I go for are relationship movies. My favorite
movie to date is called Baghdad Café. Which is not
a romantic comedy, but more about friendship. If you get
a chance, rent this movie. It will be worth your time. Some
of my other favorite movies are Good Will Hunting, Jackknife,
and Defending Your Life just to name a few.
not sure if there’s really any pattern among my favorite
movies. It’s just what strikes me at the time and
continues to hold my interest. And this year the movie that
struck a chord with me was Something’s Gotta’
Give. We’ll see if it stands up to the test of time.
